Paul Stevenson

Paul studied architecture initially with modernist, Cecil Stephenson who introduced him to the work of Ben Nicholson .  This influenced him to move into painting which he studied at St Martin’s School of Art and a career in art teaching himself.  

Stevenson was a hands on ‘sea-man’, he loved boats and their construction, working in the shadow of Ben Britten’s house in Aldeburgh, Ben Nicholson’s house in St Ives and venturing to Tréboul in Brittany - 

where Christopher Wood had worked.  In constructing these compositions he adopted Ben Nicholson’s approach to multi layering, carving out the landscapes, literally.  His solo show at Michael Parkin was appropriately titled “Sea Interludes”.
