Hanna Weil

HANNA WEIL  1921 - 2011

Hanna Weil was an artist who escaped the Anschluss and came to study in London, where her tutors at St Martins included Vivien PItchforth and Muriel Pemberton. She, herself, taught at St Martins and Hammersmith until the 80’s.  She travelled widely in Europe after the War and painted buildings - cityscapes, facades, rooflines.  She seems so unusual in this her love, obsession almost, for urban pattern outweighing any interest in the figures that might populate the spaces. She flattens perspective and gleefully rearranges  positions - creating an intense texture of vernacular, classical and the religious architectures.  She lent her hand to poster design as well - London Transport keep some, as do the V & A.
