by ALFRED REGINALD THOMPSON RA  1894-1979

Oil on panel 15.5 x 12 inches, signed.

Alfred Thompson was known as the ‘deaf and dumb’ artist. By the end of the First world war Thomson established himself as a commercial artist and figure painter. In the 1930s he created a series of murals for the Duncannon Hotel in London He was an official War Artist to the RAF in the 2nd World War. In the 1948 Olympic Games in London, Thomson became the last person to win a Gold Medal for painting. Medals for art were abandoned in subsequent Olympic games. His pictures are in numerous public collections, including the Tate. These inspirational summer colours are typical of his love of an energetic palette.
