‘Red Flower Garden’
by HANS SCHWARZ, 1922-2003 RWS, RP, RBA, NEAC
Oil on board, signed. 16 x 20 ins.
Hans Schwarz encapsulates all that is the best in terms of the ‘open door’ Britain offered many artists escaping the Anschluss. He began art school in Vienna and his work is indebted to that of Schiele and Kokoshka ; he loved German expressionism and often challenged the accepted palette - painting in effect in reverse terms - green grass in strong reds for example. He was a great portrait painter and his work hangs in many British institutions - he painted R.A. Butler for Trinity College, Cambridge; trade unionists and Sir Nikolaus Pevsner for the National Portrait Gallery. He was described as funny, friendly and deeply interested in others - he had no sense of self importance at all, caring only about the job in hand; he painted up to the day he died.
