"Trout on a Plate' by Adrian Ryan, 1920-1998 Oil on canvas, 12 x 16 inches, signed, Ex: Artist's family collection.
Adrian Ryan, once described as the painter's painter, led something of a charmed life. Educated at Eton and trained at the Slade he lived between Suffolk, Cornwall and the South of France. All of these elements are reflected in his painting - an admirer of Bonnard and Soutine, his brushwork is definitely French school. His landscapes capture the coves of Cornwall and the villages of Brittany as well as still life compositions. Seafood fascinated him - the colours of 'nature morte' the gleam in an eye or on a fishscale, a continual investigation....
His work was purchased on behalf of the Tate Gallery among many others.
