ROBERT BUHLER R.A. 1916-1989
Oil on canvas, 28 x 36 inches, signed.
Born to Swiss parents in London, Robert Buhler studied abroad in Basel and then at St Martins followed by the Royal College of Art. He found a cohort of like minded painters in Lawrence Gowing, Carel Weight, Roland Pitchforth and Roger de Grey - often sharing exhibitions with them in London at dealers such as Agnews. His trademark oils show a spare style with a controlled, contained palette, paint is built up in fine thin layers. Here, the subtlety of that limited range conveys the soft light falling on the water meadows, exploring the geometry of the landscape . Buhler held teaching positions in London and was a member of the NEAC, The London Group and the Royal Academy with paintings in many public collections.
