Oil on panel 24 x 20 inches, signed, dated1932 original labels verso. Provenance: The Artists’s studio collection.

R.H. Sauter was a noted painter, printmaker and writer  - he was nephew to the novelist John Galsworthy. He studied art in London and in Munich and showed work both in London, Paris and in New York.  His main body of work is figurative although he embraced abstraction later in life - sadly a lot of his paintings were lost in a fire in the 1980’s but several major collections including the National Portrait Gallery, the Ferens Gallery and the Government collection hold examples. He was a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy and the Paris Salon among others.
