Richard Swaby Platt, gifted artist and music conoisseur, could see rythmn and design in both urban and coastal landscapes. His works in public collections show an acute eye for shape and colour  - as here,'Café on the Quai de la Tournelle' records a moment in Paris when light illuminates the white plane of the little café wall and lifts the striped awning into focus; this was his Royal Academy exhibit for 1949 and captures all the hopefulness of the post-war moment. He studied at the Royal College of Art and exhibited from 1949 at the Royal Academy, and during the 1950s with the New English Art Club and the elite London Group. Today you can find his work in several public collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Government Art Collection.
