Norman was born into a Russian-Jewish family in Leeds, he trained at Leeds and Bradford Colleges of Art, around his war service in Greece. By 1952 he had joined a circle for artists in Camden that included William Coldstream and Liam Hanley and he began journey into figurative, almost surreal dream like landscapes peopled by clowns, trees and birds who float in a suspended landscape of forests or single trees. There are deeply felt, Chagall-like compositions in subtle muted colours. From 1965 Norman began to work on a series of solo exhibitions with Belgrave Gallery, Portal Gallery and Piccadilly Gallery, he was frequently selected for the RA annual exhibitions as well.
