HUMPHREY SPENDER 1910-2005
Watercolour on paper, 70 x 53 cm, signed and dated ’95
Humphrey Spender came from a notably talented family - his brother Stephen Spender, the poet, and his elder brother Michael, a scientist.
Initially Humphrey Spender followed interests in photography and architecture; he studied at Freiburg University for a year and met influential literary figures such as Christopher Isherwood who introduced him to the European avant-garde in film and photography. Humphrey majored in photography for his life work and was an Official War Office Photographer during the Second World War. But in 1955 he made a move to teach art and design at the Royal College of Art for the next twenty years. His subjects reflect the natural world and in these works we find his joy and his imagination shining through. £1,700. -
