Evelyn Abelson was born in London and trained at the Campden Hill School of Art and then at Heatherley's School of Art. She made many studies of London, combining topography and urban life studies. In many ways her work performs an important historical function in documenting the city prior to the bombing raids of the War, such as this colourful view of Leicester Square, complete with children, posters, facades and park benches, She exhibited regularly with the Royal Academy, the New English Art Club and the R.B.A.. Today examples of her work hang in public collections such as a magnificent 'Trafalgar Square' now with the Government Art Collection.
