Lionel Bulmer
'Footpath to the River Blyth'
Oil on board, 31 cm square, framed to 41 cm square., label verso.
Lionel Bulmer was the son of an architect, he initially studied art at Clapham Art School before being conscripted into the army at the age of 19. Post war he was accepted into the Royal College of Art which was then displaced from London to the Lake District - here he met fellow student, Margaret Green, who became his wife. After graduation the pair accepted teaching jobs around the London art schools, including the Royal Academy Schools. They fell into life in Suffolk - embracing painting in Aldeburgh, Walberswick and Southwold. Lionel’s almost pointillist technique suited the light and shade of the beaches and this is a typical colourist view - the palette distilling all the heat of the sun under a blue sky
