Sandra Blow R.A.

 

Sandra Blow was born to a Jewish family in Stoke Newington, she studied at St Martin’s and then transitionally at the Royal Academy before moving to Italy and joining the Rome Academia di Belle Arti in 1947.  She became one of our leading abstractionists showing often large scale works that incorporated gesture, collage and mixed media.  She spent a little time based in St Ives but was a truly international figure included at the Venice Biennale in 1958 and wining the International Guggenheim award. She worked across Europe and brought her tutorial skills to the Royal College of Art from 1960 onwards. She was elected as a Royal Academician in 1978.
