Paul Maze was born in Le Havre and came to live in England after the Great War. He knew the later French impressionist painters, particularly Vuillard and Signac, and became a friend and mentor to Winston Churchill in his artistic interests. His work hangs in many public and private collections and is represented in the Tate Gallery.
